This hardy evergreen perennial Dianthus deltoides 'Brilliancy' forms a dense mat of soft green foliage which acts as a fantastic ground cover and effective weed suppressant through the year. From late spring, it wakes up with a profusion of beautiful, vibrant crimson red flowers with delicate pinked edges, then just keeps on blooming continuously throughout the entire season and well into autumn. This fantastic plant os a perfect choice for covering bare ground in a sunny spot, spreading gradually over walls or let it cushion itself between rockery stones. Beautiful, prolific and low maintenance, it's fair to say that this long-lasting plant is a bit of a garden superstar! Height: 20cm (8"). Spread: 30cm (12").
Sow February to April. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Keep at a temperature of between 18-20C (64-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 14-30 days.
Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, at a distance of 30cm (12in) apart. Plant Dianthus on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
Feed and water Dianthus plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Dianthus flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
