An unusual colour twist!
Highly scented blooms
A cottage garden favourite with an unusual colour twist! This beautiful Sweet William produces large heads of pretty pink flowers that gradually mature to white, creating a delightful bicolour effect. Sweet William 'Kaleidoscope' is highly scented with multi branching stems that make it superb for cutting. Often grown as a biennial, this short lived perennial is ideal for borders, beds and containers, and will even flower in the same year if sown early. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 30cm (12").Culinary note: Use the clove like tasting petals for adding to cakes, either for flavour or decorating, suitable for soups, salads and sauces too. Companion planting: Try growing kale with Nasturtiums to draw cabbage white butterflies away from your crop, and mint to help deter flea beetles.
Sow Sweet William seeds indoors or under glass from January to February as a late flowering annual, or from June to July for flowering the following the spring. Sow on the surface of a good quality seed compost and gently firm down. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) or seal inside a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 7 - 21 days. Keep the compost damp but not wet and do not exclude light.
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow Sweet William plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Plant Sweet Williams at a distance of 30cm (12") apart on any fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
Feed and water Sweet William plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Sweet William flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
